Neighbours in a quiet Nottingham area were left in shock after police descended on the streets and cordoned off areas.

Officers taped off Bernard Street in Carrington on Monday morning (January 31), and concerned residents living on the street had to sign in when entering or leaving.

Many described the police presence as ‘unusual’ for the area.

Lesley De Banke, a sports worker who lives on Bernard Street, said: “I was so surprised to see so many police cars because this is such a quiet area.”

The 58-year-old added: “This is area is like a sleepy village on Saturday nights.

“It is a bit concerning really – just very, very strange.

“The police have been very lovely and helpful though.”

Two residents living at Navdeep Court on Bernard Street said they shocked to see “so many police” in the area.

Akshra Chhabra, a 24-year-old student at NTU, said: “It has been like this since last night.

“I’ve never seen so many police cars in my life.”

She also said that a section of Hucknall Road was also cordoned off.

Housewife Ankita Setthi, 30, added: “I’m very worried.

“There are two police vans in our car park and we know nothing about it. We haven’t been told anything.

“It’s just very worrying.”

Another resident said she had been woken up by sirens on Sunday night before witnessing the incident.

Lisa Evison, a neighbour living in the area, 32, added: “It felt like an episode of Line of Duty.

“Police were chasing a car down on the main road, and then stopped a vehicle.”

More residents said that they have spotted “armed officers” on Hucknall Road on Sunday night (January 30) before the police reportedly cordoned off a section of the street.

Ms Evison went on and said: “They pushed the driver to the ground – it was like a movie scene.”

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson said:

“Two men were arrested shortly after a car was pulled over in Mayo Road, Carrington, shortly before 8pm yesterday (Sunday).

“Officers chased one suspect on foot and detained him on nearby Bernard Street. Two men, aged 30 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to possess criminal property.

“They remain in police custody.

“Police remained in the area for some time afterward while a detailed search for potential evidence was carried out.”
