A man has been jailed after he helped himself to more than £100 worth of sweets and chocolates while sleeping at East Midlands Airport.

Dean Simpson, 41, decided to go to East Midlands Airport in the early hours of the morning because he “didn’t want to sleep on the street” and the safest place he could think of to sleep was the public viewing area.

While he was there, though, he helped himself to tubes of Fruit Pastilles and Galaxy bars from WH Smith, the court was told.

The confectionery was recovered from his bag during a search, Leicestershire Live reports.

Judge Ebrahim Mooncey said the case “sounded a bit like something from a Tom Hanks movie”, referring to 2004 film The Terminal.

He asked Simpson, who appeared via a live video link from prison custody: “Why steal more than £100 worth of sweets?”

Simpson said: “Just to sell on, I was struggling with money at the time, I’d have sold them in Leicester.”

The judge said: “It all seems very bizarre.”

Earlier in the hearing, Simpson’s barrister, Nicola Patten, said: “He’s been suffering from poor mental health and wants to sort his life out.

“He’s been in custody for 28 days.”

Simpson, formerly of Gilmorton Close, Aylestone, Leicester, pleaded guilty to two bail offences and one of breaching a suspended sentence relating to an earlier offence of dishonesty.

Sentencing, Judge Mooncey told Simpson: “Your offending is frequent and you have 106 offences on your record, of which 64 are for dishonesty and fraud.

“You’ve received drug treatment, with earlier suspended sentences, and been given opportunities to be rid of your drug issues that you haven’t taken up.

“You stole over £100 worth of sweets from the WH Smith branch at East Midlands Airport.

“You told me you took a bus and were planning to stay the night there.”

The judge said the defendant was previously suspected of a similar offence at the airport, last August, that was not proceeded with.

He added: “It looks like you go to that location quite regularly.

“Custody is inevitable.

“Your future is in your hands and there’s not point the court making orders because you probably won’t follow them.”

Simpson, who already had 106 offences on his record, was jailed for a total of 10 months.
