A generous gesture by a Notts pub has raised more than £45,000 to help Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war-torn country.

The Old Volunteer in Caythorpe has donated a week’s takings and staff have given up their tips after being moved by the heart-breaking scenes.

The money will go to Red Cross Ukraine, a charity providing food, first aid, clean water, shelter support, warm clothing, hygiene parcels and medicines to those in need.

Sean Reddington, the Old Volunteer’s landlord, said: “The ongoing situation in Ukraine is deeply unsettling, and as the news rolls in, it’s easy to feel helpless in times like these.

“What’s really special is that it was the team’s idea to volunteer donating their tips too.

“We all really want to show our support for the people of Ukraine and get our local communities involved by doing what we do best.”

The total raised comes to £45,389.

Last month Nottinghamshire Live visited the village pub which has become a must-visit spot for local food and drink lovers after its takeover last year.

The new owners have introduced a fresh look, a gastro-pub menu and talented new staff to widespread acclaim.

Open seven days a week, from noon to late evening, the gastro-pub offers a fusion menu, with Asian-inspired dishes served alongside reimagined pub classics like the Sunday roast and fish and chips.
