BBC Strictly Come Dancing star Aljaž Škorjanec has quit the popular television show. Issuing a lengthy statement, he explained where it all began and how “one phone call” changed his life forever.

The 32-year-old professional dancer took to Instagram to issue his statement and update to fans. Posting a montage of pictures taken during shows over the years, he said his journey began “on a beautiful sunny day in May 2013”.

Joining the show at just 23, he said: “It didn’t matter how many beautiful ballrooms I performed in during my competitive career, stepping onto the sacred Strictly floor was the most nervous I had ever been.” Now, having worked on the show for nine years, he has confirmed that he will not be returning for the 2022 series.

He thanked colleagues and said: “Being a part of a group of professionals that inspire and push you to be better every step of the way is humbling and I will carry that inspiration with me forever.”, but added that he has “exciting stuff planned”.

The Slovenian dancer said: “A little while ago I made the tough decision that Strictly 2021 would be my last. The show has given me an opportunity and freedom to create and express myself in front of millions of people every weekend for the last nine years.

“The love and support I got from the team of producers was second to none. Louise Rainbow, Sarah James, Kim Winston, Jack Gledhill are just a few of the unsung heroes behind the success of the show – I am forever grateful to them.”

He continued: “Being a part of a group of professionals that inspire and push you to be better every step of the way is humbling and I will carry that inspiration with me forever. Every year the line-up of dancers would change but one thing stayed the same, WE WERE THE BEST!

“And this is one thing that I know will never change on Strictly! Strictly also has the BEST backstage team – the hair and make-up team, costume department, lighting, sound, props and special effects, camera operators… THANK YOU!”

Aljaž also took the opportunity to thank his past celebrity partners, including Alison Hammond, Gemma Atkinson, Clara Amfo and Abbey Clancy – who he won the glitterball trophy with back in 2013.

He concluded: “I have lots of exciting stuff planned that I will fill you in on soon. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Call the Midwife actress, Helen George reacted with: “Oh partner, you are amazing!! The best dancer and man. Can’t wait to hear what you’ll do next, but I know you will succeed in whatever you do. Proud to be a tiny part of your Strictly journey xxx” And fans were quick to add their comments.

One fan said: “I’m So gutted to see you leaving I will miss the moment I’m sharing the stage with you. Sending all my best wishes to you and I knew wherever you go you will shine like a star. Love you Alj Alj” Another wrote: “Congratulations @aljazskorjanec 9 years of making us all so happy “.
