Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas has had a lot to say about this week’s Oscar’s drama. The much written about ‘slap’ handed out by Will Smith after Chris Rock’s alopecia joke at the Academy Awards, also hit home with Lucas who has suffered from alopecia since childhood.

Apparently referencing Jade Pinkett-Smith’s hair loss due to alopecia, comedian Rock joked that he was looking forward ‘GI Jane 2’. “Can’t wait to see it”, he quipped. But Jada’s husband Will Smith leapt onto the stage and slapped Chris during the live Oscars show.

Taking to Twitter yesterday, Monday, March 28, Lucas wrote: “I thought I dreamt this but I just looked on YouTube and it actually happened”. He added a clip of the event.

He followed the tweet up with “Anyone else need therapy after watching The Oscars? I’m not even joking.” The Little Britain star and comedian has suffered from alopecia since childhood having lost all of his hair at the age of six.

Later, he joked: “Lot of people weighing in on Will Smith but I have to say that if Chris Rock said that about my wife I would be confused because I don’t have a wife.” Following each of the tweets, fans debated the event. One said :”I’m on Will’s side 100%.. must be difficult enough to be losing your hair without people making jokes at your expense. I don’t condone violence but it was only a slap not a full on punch…”

Another said: “In this instance Rock was being a bully, mocking someone’s illness. That’s not comedy. Rock also has a history of targeting Pinkett-Smith and other Black women. Not condoning Smith’s assault, but I understand it.”. But another Twitter user said: “Sorry!! I don’t get it ? What did he say that was bad or that insulting that will was upset about ???”

Fellow comedian Jason Manford joined in the conversation. He wrote: “Absolutely shocking. I still can’t believe it happened”. However, the mixed opinion continued. One person wrote: “The fact that he laughed at such a misguided joke to start with, then saw his wife’s face and ‘the light’….He should have held her hand, and dealt with it later. He took everything away from the people who won an Oscar. Including, himself.” Someone else added: “I did however enjoy the theatrical nature of the slap, a real flourish and then a good strong storm off the stage. I mean, you don’t often see a fight like that in the Boozer on a Friday night.”

Matt Lucas said: “I have alopecia AND I’m a comedian who sometimes gets it wrong. I have no idea what I’m supposed to think about last night.” Will Smith later picked up the award for Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams – the father of tennis players Venus and Serena – in the film King Richard. He used his acceptance speech to apologise for his behaviour
