An inquest has opened into a 26-year-old man who was identified by his mother at the hospital. Nathaniel Paul Bierley died at the Queen’s Medical Centre, the inquest at Nottingham’s Council House heard.

Mr Bierley was born on October 27, 1995. He passed away on March 17 aged just 26 in circumstances that might not indicate a death of natural causes, the inquest heard.

His family previously said the Five Guys worker was enjoying celebrating his third anniversary with his girlfriend when he was attacked in Nottingham City Centre, which led to a severe brain injury.

The hearing on Monday, April 4, has been adjourned for the completion of further inquiries, with it to resume on a date to be fixed. Mr Gordon Clow, Assistant Coroner for Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire, said: “The circumstances in which he was found might suggest that he did not die of natural causes.”

Mr Clow added: “It is therefore in my duty to open this inquest. I would like to send my condolences and best wishes to his family and friends.”

Officers had previously charged a 21-year-old man with grievous bodily harm in connection with Mr Brierley’s death. He is due to next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on April 6. A 17-year-old boy, who was also arrested on March 8 on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, has been bailed with conditions while the investigation continues.

Mr Clow opened a number of inquests on Monday. The death of a woman who was found dead at her home address in Colston Bassett will also be examined.
