The whites and shirts are washed, they’ve finally dried and it’s time to iron them to look pristine. But those scorch marks on the iron from wear and tear are not spotted, ruining that fresh washing and returning that garment to square one.

It can be a nightmare when that happens, and can ruin some clothes permanently in the process. But there might not be a need to spend money on expensive cleaning products, as a mother has shared a cheap and easy trick to get rid of those scorch marks using an item that may already be in the house.

According to one mother and others sharing cleaning tips on Facebook, there’s one item lurking in the medicine cabinet that holds all the answers when it comes to cleaning scorch marks. It’s a paracetamol tablet.

And if there aren’t any in the house, a pack of 16 can be bought for as little as 29p from Tesco, meaning that if one is needed to clean the iron, the following hack actually costs less than 2p to carry out.

So, what’s the method?

The clever hack has been endorsed by countless cleaning fans on the Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, and one mum who tried it herself said she never “would have guessed” that something as simple as paracetamol would work wonders on her iron.

First, turn the iron onto the highest heat setting. Then, hold the paracetamol tablet with a pair of tweezers, and – taking care not to burn yourself – rub it over the hot metal surface of the iron.

The scorch marks should then slide off, and the iron can then be cleaned once it’s cool enough to handle. One post on Facebook that applauded this hack read: “Who would have guessed paracetamol could be used to clean an iron??!!

“Just use an uncoated paracetamol tablet, held in a pair of tweezers. Allow the iron to heat, and rub the paracetamol in circles, the burn marks just wipe away!! I love this group!”

And in the comments of the post, others were equally as stunned, as one said: “Best hack ever, can’t believe how many products I’d tried before finding this out – so satisfying how easy it just melts away!”

If you’re not convinced by the magic of paracetamol though, there are other hacks that are said to clean scorch marks – including using a mixture of baking powder and water. Apparently, if you mix two tbsp of baking soda and one tbsp of water into a paste and spread it over the iron while it’s cool, you can then rub away the scorch marks with a non-scratch cloth.

And you can even use sea salt. Simply sprinkle salt onto a clean, dry cotton cloth placed on your ironing board, then gently iron over the cloth several times until the stains come off.
