A couple living in Nottingham who have been together for more than six years but never went on holiday have been on their first trip abroad to Jamaica after winning a competition. Emily Gilbert, 24, works as a diagnostic radiographer at Nottingham Breast Institute at Beeston, and partner Luke Walford, 27, is an army veteran who served from 2012 to the middle of this year, and now works as a for a tree surgeon company in Leicester.

The NHS worker and army veteran live together in Beeston. They had never been away due to busy work schedules, time spent away from home and saving money for a house. In 2020, Emily entered a competition to win a holiday to luxury resort Sandals South Coast in Jamaica.

Five months later, Emily found out she had won the holiday for them both, and at first thought it was a con. And the couple recently enjoyed their first holiday away on the island for a week.

Emily said: “We had personal butlers who gave us a smartphone to contact them for anything, it felt like we were royalty. When we arrived, our butler had already run a bath for us with flowers and candles, and we had a private breakfast which was served to us on our balcony on our first morning.

“It was so hot and sunny, and it looked like something from a postcard – the water was beautiful! My favourite part was snorkelling on the coral reef, the things we saw were just incredible.

“Luke is quite adventurous, so he absolutely loved the wakeboarding. We also saw a hummingbird for the first time in both of our lives, so that was a really magical moment, seeing a hummingbird flying between the tropical flowers.

“The funniest moment was probably when we capsized our kayak – I don’t have the best balance! We had to do a Covid test prior to travel and after we landed back in England, but it was all easy enough.

“We’re trying to save up to buy a house, so that’s our priority at the moment, which is why it’s so amazing that we were able to have this holiday, but in the future, we’d love to explore some new places. It was just amazing to have so much quality time together after a difficult few years during the pandemic, we had the best time!”
