Statement over police plane that was seen circling over Nottinghamshire

Officials have explained the reason why a police plane was spotted circling over Nottinghamshire late at night. The aircraft could be seen above the borough of Broxtowe at around 11pm on Tuesday, April 26.

The plane, which belongs to the National Police Air Service (NPAS), was seen by residents across the borough. It was mainly circling just east of Strelley, according to tracking app Flight Radar.

After being approached by Nottinghamshire Live, NPAS said that the plane was assisting Nottinghamshire Police in the search for a suspect vehicle. It said the aircraft spent 12 minutes in the area.

The plane had previously been in Newark for 50 minutes assisting police in the search for a missing woman. A spokeswoman for NPAS said: “NPAS attended two tasks in the Nottinghamshire Police area last night.

“At 10.02pm a police aeroplane was deployed in the Newark area to assist Nottinghamshire Police in the search for a missing person. Total time on task was 56 minutes. The crew were diverted to a further task in Nottingham.

“At 10.58pm the aeroplane was deployed to assist Nottinghamshire Police in the search for a suspect vehicle in the Nottingham area. Total time on task was 12 minutes.” NPAS, which are based at Doncaster, operate police aeroplanes across England and Wales. It said two were in operation nationwide on the night of April 26.
