A man has died in a crash on the A453. Traffic continues to build to the M1 and A50 following the incident which happened in the early hours of Wednesday (May 4).

Nottinghamshire Police say an investigation is underway after two vehicles crashed on the A453 Remembrance Way, near Ratcliffe-on-Soar, at around 4.48am. Traffic monitoring site Inrix reports one vehicle involved was a motorbike. The collision happened from Green Street in Clifton and West Leake Lane, in Ratcliffe on Soar.

The outbound carriageway of the A453 from Mill Hill Roundabout, next to the Clifton South tram stop, is expected to remain closed until at least the afternoon. Green Street to Barton-in-Fabis has also been closed.

The A453 is open northbound. But police said traffic remained at a standstill. Motorists heading southbound to the M1 are being turned around at Mill Hill. A warning to avoid the area has been issued.

Sergeant Steve Waft, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with this man’s family and friends at this sad time. Our investigation is still in its early stages and we are working hard to understand exactly what happened. We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or any drivers who may have recorded dash-cam footage to please get in touch with us. Anyone with any information is urged to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 52 of 4 May 2022.”

The typically busy southbound carriageway was completely devoid of traffic following its closure early in the morning. One lane on the inbound route was also closed temporarily but reopened mid-morning.

Miles upon miles of queuing traffic could be seen from Clifton Village all the way back through Ratcliffe-on-Soar and to the M1 and A50. Significant traffic delays, including buses, were reported.

National Highways said at the time: “Advised the A453 southbound will remain closed by Nottinghamshire Police until early afternoon to allow for collision Investigation to take place following a serious collision.”
