Those living near the airport in Tollerton love the location, describing how neighbours watch planes flying low over their homes and hear the rumbling engines from their gardens. Nottingham City Airport in Tollerton Lane is also home to the Chocs Away Airport Cafe which offers a perfect view of the runway.

To the west of the airport, off the A52, people in Gamston provided a snapshot into what it’s actually like to live so close to it. Company co-director Jo Raynor, 59, said she ‘loved’ the location.

“I’ve been here 27 years. I don’t notice it – it’s not big planes, they’re small: all two seaters, four seaters. No problems, it’s part and parcel – it’s just been there for so long.”

Gamston resident Alan Thompson, who is 62, spoke about the noise of the plane engines. Mr Thompson said: “It is noisy – it’s only private planes. They seem to pass over this way. When they go over your garden it’s quite loud – I sooner not hear it.”

Another resident of Gamston, who asked to remain anonymous, had no complaints. “I think it’s great. I love it. I’m used to the noise now – it doesn’t bother me at all. I think you just get used to something that’s always been there, you can’t complain about it.”

It’s a similar opinion in Tollerton. Villager Phil Poyser, 69, said: “When you’ve lived here for 20 years you get used to it. You see the planes going over the houses quite low. I don’t do any plane spotting. It doesn’t bother me.”

A resident on Tollerton Lane, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I think the fact I’ve been here for 50 years – it’s here and doesn’t bother me. It’s just something I wouldn’t like to see – we wouldn’t miss it..”
