Nottingham’s flagship Boots store is celebrating 50 years at the Victoria Centre location. The company archivist, Sophie Clapp shares some of the photographs in the Boots archive that document the changes to the store from its opening in 1972 to today.

“The archive is the corporate memory of Boots and by keeping this collection, we can chart what we’ve done, understand who we are and draw on that for brand advocacy,” Sophie explained.

“We are very lucky to have one and it’s the largest retail archive in the UK. It charts the development of Boots since 1849. It’s a vast collection of documents, photographs and film footage. It’s a real mixture of activities that we try to capture and a piece of social history.”

The original store was known locally as ‘the grand dame of Pelham Street.’When it came to the launch day, the chairman opened the store as a VIP guest.

“As it was our hometown, it was hugely symbolic for employees. It was a significant change in location from Pelham street (now Zara) to Victoria Centre as it was the largest shopping centre in the UK. It was a real statement about Boots that it has always tried to have the latest innovations and set-up. It was a natural progression to open in the centre,” Sophie said.
