A customer trying to trade his bicycle to raise cash for rent got angry and threatened to shoot a member of staff in the head at a pawnbrokers. Justin Slater visited the Cash Shop, in Kings Walk, Nottingham city centre, which accepts items in return for cash.

Slater had approached a till at 4.30pm on April 15 and informed staff he wished to pawn his bicycle as he required money for rent. But he was informed there was no room to accept his bicycle in the store. The defendant did not like the response, Nottingham Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday, June 16.

“He started to get angry,” explained Lottie Tyler, prosecuting. “He started swearing at the staff member and he was shouting he needed money”.

“He said, ‘why don’t you come outside and watch, and I’ll ******* shoot you in the head'”,” said Miss Tyler. The worker was not afraid but was shocked by Slater’s words.

The defendant then pushed the glass window with open palms, causing it to smash, before he walked away. Slater, 50, whose address is care of Goose Gate, Nottingham, pleaded guilty damaging a glass separating window which was worth more than £600.

The court was told he has 25 convictions for 56 offences. He was on a community order at the time of this offence. Mitigating, Stephen Burdon said Slater had admitted the matter in police interview. He was surprised the glass broke in the way it did and he accepted he left the store straight away.

In September 2021, Slater was given an alcohol treatment requirement for six months. At the time of this offence, he had started drinking again and was struggling with that and his mental health.

“He is doing what he can to try and resolve the alcohol issue,” added Mr Burdon. The case was adjourned for probation to contact ‘wellbeing help’ to see if the defendant is suitable.
