A student was taken to the floor and put in handcuffs when he was spotted whipping his belt in the street outside Pryzm Nottingham club in Lower Parliament Street. Police rushed to the venue on February 26 this year amid reports of an incident inside.

Whilst they were there, they were alerted to a fight outside. Officers saw 20 people in the street, incuding door staff, scattering across the road. One of the revellers was Liam Skerritt, 18, of Laws Close, Milking Nook, Peterborough, who held his black belt strap in both hands to create a loop.

Skerritt was “whipping” the belt in the direction of a person, explained Freddie Sail, prosecuting, at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (June 17). “The defendant was taken to floor with the help of door staff, and officers held him in handcuffs”, the court was told.

“He said once he was outside the club ‘everyone was throwing punches from both sides’. He accepted he wore a leather belt around his jeans”. The buckle fell off. He accepted the belt connected with another male in the shoulder area.

Mr Sail added: “The Crown says it is high culpability and use of a weapon”.

Stephen Burdon, mitigating, said one of Skerritt’s friends had been attacked. Someone recognised him from his friend’s group and attacked him.

Skerritt’s belt buckle fell off and his trousers were falling down, explained Mr Burdon. Skerritt removed his belt and he was “waving” the belt towards the person who had an altercation with him to ward him away.

Skerritt is in his second year at college doing a Level 3 electrical installation course. Presiding magistrate Peter Forster said it was a “particularly ugly offence” as he sentenced Skerritt after he pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour.

He left court with a fine of £180, costs order of £85 and a victim surcharge order of £34.
