DWP warns of ‘potential delays’ to first cost of living payment

The first of the two Cost of Living payments is due to start this month. The UK government set Thursday, July 14, as the date that the first payment of £326 would begin to drop into people’s bank accounts. However, not everyone will received the money on that date.

More than 8 million households across the UK qualify for the one-off cash boost. While next Thursday’s date is the earliest it will arrive, the original announcement indicated that payment is due to continue until the end of the month.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced that the £650 total would be paid in two instalments. According to Daily Record, people who claim both a means-tested qualifying benefit and Tax Credits from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), will receive the £326 from DWP this month. Those who only claim Working Tax Credits or Child Tax Credits will get the first of their two payments later this year – a date has still to be announced.

The question of whether all Universal Credit claimants would receive the government’s cost of living payments at the same time, was posed to the DWP by Independent MP, Neil Coyle. He began: “To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, whether all Universal Credit claimants will receive the proposed cost of living payments at the same time as everyone else.”

In a written response, DWP Minister, David Rutley, who is the Conservative MP for Macclesfield said: “Due to the volume of people entitled to the payment, it is not possible to issue all of the Cost of Living Support Payments at the same time. Issuing payments will be staggered, but not by benefit type, starting on 14/07/2022.

“We currently expect the majority of payments to be made by the end of July, there may be potential delays for a small minority of cases due to their unique characteristics.”
