Estates with rapidly-built towers and off-the-shelf designs were supposed to be the future of housing. But few places disproved that idea like the short-lived Hyson Green flats.
Built in the 60s and demolished in the 80s, they were certainly welcome to begin with, with clean, modern interiors and utilities. They were a far cry from the houses they replaced.
They developed a reputation that spread outside the city’s borders, but inside they were much the same as a big city estate anywhere else. A tight, diverse community developed in spite of that reputation, and you’ll find plenty of good memories made here.

Structural defects saw leaks, crumbling concrete and corroding steel supports develop over the years. Years upon years of complaints were not being resolved in good time, and costs mounted on the council – in the end, proposals to demolish the flats just 20 years after people started moving in were welcomed.
They were emptied out and demolished over the course of a few years in the mid-80s. Take a look at photos of the flats between 1984 and 1987 below to see a ghost town come down.
