The Duchess of Cambridge had to make a swift exit from the Wimbledon tennis tournament last year. As Wimbledon returns this week (June 27), Kate Middleton’s visit to the royal box was cut short in 2021.

As the top tennis players from around the world descend on southwest London in an effort to win the tournament, members of the Royal Family also make an appearance. The Duchess is a big fan of the competition but last year her trip was cut short as she got an unexpected alert.

Cambridgeshire Live reports that as Kate was sat in the royal box watching Dan Evans, she found out that she had been in contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19. During that time, the rules meant people with a close contact had to self isolate.

This meant she had to leave the tennis and immediately return home to Kensington Palace to carry out her quarantine period. At this point, Kate had received her coronavirus vaccine and it is believed she tested negative for the virus, The Mirror reports.

However, it did mean she had to miss some engagements that week but was out of isolation to return to Wimbledon for the ladies’ final, which saw Ashleigh Barty take the title. She was also back at the club a day later for the men’s final, won by Novak Djokovic, before she paid a trip to Wembley for England’s Euro 2020 final against Italy.

This week has been a busy one for Kate as she has celebrated her husband Prince William‘s 40th birthday, unveiled a national memorial to the Windrush generation and carried out engagements in Cambridgeshire.

One was to the Fitzwilliam Museum to unveil a newly-commissioned dazzling royal portrait – the first of themselves together as a couple.
