Onlookers were stunned as a lorry crashed through the wall on Lady Bay Bridge and landed next to a row of businesses. Emergency services were called out to the bridge at around 8.50am on Monday, July 4 after reports that a lorry had fallen down an embankment.

A large emergency service presence was later established near to the incident, with the bridge closed in both directions by police. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed one man was injured in the crash, whose condition was later stated by Nottinghamshire Police not be life threatening or altering.

Those nearby were shocked as the situation unfolded. Will Stewart, 57, a welder at Global Security was sat in his car waiting to go to work when he heard the lorry hit the wall. He said: “I was sat waiting for work to open and then I heard the screeching, looked behind me and saw the wall collapsing.

“The lorry flipped onto its drivers side. I tried to get over the fence to help but I couldn’t. I was just underneath it all.”

Martin Camm, 54, who is frequently on the industrial estate the lorry landed next to, said: “I heard the big bang and that was all I knew.

“It’s quite a shock for people that work around here. There’s a lot of damage to the bridge.”

A local, who wished to remain anonymous, added: “It’s a lot of damage. It’s a shocking thing to see when you’re walking about. I hope everything turns out alright.”

Shortly after the crash, a Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.51am today to a report of a lorry leaving the carriageway at Lady Bay Bridge in West Bridgford and crashing down an embankment. The bridge is closed while emergency services deal with the incident. Motorists are asked to find an alternative route.”

Nottinghamshire Police asked motorists to “find an alternative route” after the crash had closed off the bridge. After the collision traffic monitoring site site Inrix recorded traffic was “very slow” in the area.

Local business Vale Skips confirmed they owned the lorry, but said they were not able to speak at this time about the incident.
