A section of the M1 is closed due to a car fire on Monday (June 27) morning. Lanes 1, 2 and 3 (of 4) are currently shut on the southbound between junctions 17 and 16.
The closure was put in place just before 9am this morning, according to National Highways: East Midlands. Fire service are on scene dealing with the incident.
Traffic officers are also on scene, it has been reported. Motorists have been warned to expect long delays on approach.
There are six miles of congestion causing 40 min delays above normal travel time. In a tweet, National Highways said: “Lanes 1, 2 and 3 (of 4) are closed on the M1 southbound between J17 (M45) and J16 (Northampton) due to a vehicle fire.
“Fire service are on scene and dealing. Traffic Officers are also on scene. There are six miles of congestion causing 40 minute delays above normal travel time.”
