A man who cuts hair for homeless people in Nottingham city centre for free has said ‘you have to bless others’. A Facebook post of Wisdom Oviawe, who lives on Mapperley Park Drive in Mapperley Park, cutting hair has been liked and shared by hundreds of people
He cut hair on Clumber Street on Thursday (July 7), the same day as his birthday, when he turned 22. Wisdom taught himself to cut hair through YouTube during lockdown to keep himself busy.
He started to cut his younger brother’s hair and now cuts it for people he knows and has been cutting hair for homeless people in the city for the past three months – and says he will continue to do so, as well as travelling to other cities. Wisdom does this all in his own time and says he is himself a ‘changed guy’ from previous life experiences.

Wisdom said: “I used to go clubbing when I was younger and I got arrested a few times for fighting. But I’m a changed guy now, I’ve had that life experience and I’ve been through some things to understand that.
“Life is about giving, I want to do this to help others. To be blessed, you have to bless others, you have to be something – I did it from the heart and I want to thank everyone for their kind comments on social media.
“If they want me to cut their hair, I’ll cut their hair, buy some food, buy some clothes. I always ask people what they want.
“PCSOs came over at one point just to have a look, to see if I was charging, check what I was going to do with the hair. But I brought a brush to sweep it all up, I wasn’t just going to leave it there.
Wisdom previously studied construction, brickwork and painting at college, and is now training to become a professional boxer. He’s training three times a week, and says boxing is his main focus.
He said: “I’m currently an amateur boxer, but I’m working to become professional. I’m also a personal trainer as well now, and I think for that kind of thing some people are going through things and someone needs to be there to help.
“Some people aren’t as strong as others. Sometimes they need strong people around them.”
