Police were satisfied that the incident had no links to terrorism. Paul Staples, of Finsbury Road, has been charged with possessing an explosive substance.

He appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, May 14, where he was remanded in custody. He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday afternoon (June 17) for a plea and and trial preparation hearing. Service of the prosecution case must be done by July 15, the court heard.

A further hearing is planned for September 8, and a trial date has been identified for October 31, with an estimate of five days. Judge Gregory Dickinson QC, the Recorder of Nottingham, explained to Staples the next hearing is on September 8 and “there is a lot of work to be done between now and then”.

Detective Sergeant Laura Gooch, of Nottinghamshire Police, had said: “Specialist officers have now conducted further searches of the property and have discovered no further items of concern. I would like to thank local residents for their understanding and patience as we’ve worked to resolve this incident.

“We have now charged a suspect in connection with this incident and criminal proceeding have now begun.”
