Metal detectors have been set up by police by Nottingham train station to check for weapons coming into the city centre. During an operation by Nottinghamshire Police, they were temporarily used on Station Street near one of the entrances to the train station and on Lister Gate near where the Broad Marsh shopping centre used to be.

Throughout the course of a morning, hundreds of people passed through the detectors, and police say they were well received by members of the public. According to a Facebook post from Nottingham city centre police, many said they found it reassuring to see officers in uniform as a visible presence and thought the metal detectors were a good deterrent for anyone attempting to bring weapons into Nottingham.

During the operation, three adults were found to be in possession of cannabis, and a man and woman were found to be in possession of stolen goods. Another known prolific shoplifter was given a dispersal notice banning him from entering Nottingham city centre in order to prevent any further thefts from occurring.

During the course of the day, the city centre-based Operation Reacher and Operation Compass teams conducted further foot patrols of Nottingham where they located and arrested two people wanted for court-related matters and conducted a number of stop and searches resulting in drugs being seized. Operation Reacher is a blend of proactive, evidence-led police work and engaging with the community through events and programmes to disrupt crime and Operation Compass tackles complex issues in the city centre
