A man described the moment he saw a “huge fire” billowing smoke into the sky before engines arrived. It comes as firefighters were called to reports of a blaze at a derelict building in Carlton Hill.

Three fire engines and an Aerial Ladder Platform arrived at the scene at 7.10 pm on Sunday (June 12) following reports of smoke coming through the roof. Residents in the area were urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

Kamen Sansoyer, from Bakersfield, said he witnessed the scene before the firefighters came. The 23-year-old added: “I saw the smoke coming from the building. I have seen a massive fire, and grass batches were also on fire.

“It was around 6-7pm. It was a big, huge fire.”

He added: “The smoke was quite high. I mean, I am not surprised. This is a rough area and you see it happening quite a lot around here.”

Martin Martinez, a neighbour in the area, added: “It happens quite a lot around here. It does not come as a surprise.”

The 37-year-old added: “I saw police at the scene as well.”

Jason Maxfield, who also lives in the area, added: “I did not even know it happened. I think I was asleep or probably out.”

The 50-year-old added: “It is the first time I am hearing about something like this here. It is a quiet area.”

The incident was scaled back just before 9.30pm and all the crews left the scene shortly after. The fire service carried out re-inspections overnight.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service issued a statement, adding: “We were called to the incident at 7.10pm following reports of smoke coming through the roof. It is a derelict building and local residents should keep windows and doors closed.”
