A Nottingham man accused of murdering an 11-year-old boy was given a provisional date for the murder trial. Michael Harrison will face a jury on January 12, 2023, having been charged with causing the death of the child.

Dressed in a grey sweatshirt, the 41-year-old spoke only to confirm his name at the hearing when he appeared over a video link from HMP Nottingham, reports Derbyshire Live. As well as the alleged murder of the boy, the defendant has also been charged with engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour against a woman, between January 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022.

No pleas were entered and Denny Lau, the defendant’s solicitor, did not apply for bail on his client’s behalf. Judge Nirmal Shant QC said: “It is very difficult to say what the issues are at this stage.”

Peter Joyce QC, prosecuting, replied: “The issue is likely to be causation, whether there was an assault or whether it was an accident.” Remanding Harrison into custody, Judge Shant said: “Mr Harrison, as far as you are concerned your next hearing will be on August 2.”

The boy was found injured at Shipley Country Park, near Heanor, on June 18. Derbyshire police said following an investigation, detectives charged Harrison with his murder.

On Monday, July 4, a force spokesman said: “A man has been charged with murder after an 11-year-old boy was found injured near Shipley Country Park. Ambulance crews were called to Thorpes Road, close to the park in Heanor, on the afternoon of Saturday June 18 to reports that a boy had suffered injuries. He sadly died later that day.

“A subsequent police investigation led to the arrest of a 41-year-old man in connection with the death last week. Michael Harrison, of Eaton Terrace, Mapperley, Nottingham, has now been charged with murder.

“He has also been charged with engaging in coercive and controlling behaviour. Officers from Derbyshire Constabulary and the East Midlands major crime unit will be continuing with their inquiries and will remain in the area over next few days.”

A resident who lives in Thorpes Road, who did not wish to be named, said he was shocked to hear that a man had been charged with the boy’s murder.

He said: “I’ve not heard anything about it. It’s a really nice, peaceful road. There are some pensioners around here and a few younger couples and families. We get traffic from the industrial estate and the cars for the kiddies’ school but other than that it’s really quiet.”

The police spokesman added: “Anyone with information is encouraged to speak to officers. As part of those inquiries, we want to find a white Vauxhall Combo van that may be displaying one of the following registrations: FL54 JBJ, FL54 JDJ, FG57 FTO.

“No further information into the circumstances is available at this time, but we will be issuing further witness appeals over the coming days. Anyone who can help should contact us quoting reference 22*349624”
