Princess Charlotte’s new title when Prince William becomes King

When a new monarch ascends to the throne there are often a number of title changes that happen within the Royal Family. One member who could receive a new title is Princess Charlotte when her father, Prince William, becomes King.

The Princess is the second eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and currently she is formally known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, The Mirror reports. But when Prince William becomes king the youngster, who is seven, could be given the title of The Princess Royal.

According to a post shared on the royal family’s social media accounts in August 2020 when celebrating Princess Anne’s birthday, the title follows some specific rules. “HRH The Princess Anne was named The Princess Royal, a title traditionally bestowed upon the eldest daughter of The Sovereign, in 1987,” it read. “HRH is the seventh Princess Royal, following Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V.”

As a result, two people cannot be using the Princess Royal title at the same time. For instance, while the Queen was the eldest daughter of the sovereign George VI before she became monarch, she was never known as the Princess Royal.

The reason for this is because her aunt Princess Mary held the title, therefore leading the Queen to be known as Princess Elizabeth. This means that if Princess Anne is still using the title when Prince William becomes King, Charlotte will not be able to use the title.

If the title is free, however, it will be up to William to choose whether or not to refer to his daughter as the Princess Royal. But Princess Charlotte isn’t the only royal who could be set for a title change.

Doting parents Kate Middleton and Prince William could also see a shake up when Prince Charles ascends to the throne. While the couple have been known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge since their wedding in 2011, William would be set to inherit Charles’ title of the Prince of Wales.

Meanwhile , the royal couple appeared to be in jovial mood on Thursday as they attended the first-ever Cambridgeshire County Day. The day of festivities, which included racing, performances and more than 100 stalls, saw thousands of people raise money for charity but it was Kate and Prince William who stole the show.

Kate, dressed in a patterned dress and nude wedges, was seen excitedly kicking a football at a target in front of impressed crowds. Before giving it a go, Kate told the crowd it would be difficult as she was “wearing wedges”. After taking a shot, the duchess shook the hand of a boy who had been playing before her and said: “You did better than I did.”

Not to be outdone, Prince William also bravely gave it a shot, despite donning a navy suit and suede shoes. The pair were then seen sipping on a cold beer to cool off as they cheerily spoke to several stall holders, and also sampled chocolate.
