A prison guard suffered burns when an inmate threw a kettle of boiling water over him, a court head. Paul Blake, 42, was serving time for a knife-point robbery when he launched the attack on the officer in HMP Lowdham Grange on December 24, 2020.

Blake, who has 32 convictions for 154 offences, had the kettle in his hand when the officer entered his cell. He was hit by the scalding water. Blake said he was going to kill him.

The water scalded his face, shoulder, neck and chest – but a face mask gave him some protection. It left him only being able to sleep a couple of hours a night. Another officer suffered soreness to his back during the incident.

Blake, of no fixed adress and whose date of birth is 17/09/79, has mental health problems, Nottingham Crown Court was told on Friday, July 1. He pleaded guilty to assault, causing bodily harm, receiving 12 months in prison and a one-month concurrent sentence for assaulting an emergency worker.

Recorder Stuart Sprawson said the guard was going about his business quite rightly. He and his colleague entered Blake’s cell in order to do their duties.

The victim saw a plastic surgeon afterwards and needed further treatment. His shoulder has permanent scarring.
