Neighbours in a Nottinghamshire village described hearing an “almighty bang” when a car went through their wall. A car reportedly crashed into three parked vehicles and the garden wall of a retired couple in London Road, Balderton, on Tuesday, June 14.

Nottinghamshire Police officers from the road crime team were patrolling the Newark area at around 9.15pm when they spotted a speeding car. The driver is understood to have ignored requests to pull over and continued to drive along Grange Road erratically and over the speed limit before colliding into the three cars, police said in a statement.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Retired Rodger Johnson, 72, and Lynn Johnson, 69, were watching television that evening before hearing a crash. Lynn said: “We were just sat watching TV and then there was this big bang, you (Rodger) ran out to see if anyone was injured, I grabbed the phone but as soon as we came out the police were there.”

Rodger said: “All we heard was an almighty bang. I jumped up and thought crikey what happened.” He explained that there had been three cars parked on the road which had been involved in the incident, and it was one of the parked cars that had been “shunted” into the wall.

One of the parked cars that had been hit belonged to retired, Pete Byham, 76, of London Road.

Pete said: “We heard a bang and went out and all the cars were smashed up.”

“There must have been 8 or 9 police there,” added Pete.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dash-cam footage is urged to get in touch with Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident 767 of 14 June 2022. Alternatively people can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
