A shopper has been criticised for taking things too far in the supermarket after posting on social media. Annoyed by the size of the stalks of the broccoli during his shop at the supermarket, the shopper took out a pen knife to cut them off, saying it was ‘a waste of money’.

Sharing photos of his cut up veg and penknife in a money-saving Facebook page, he said: “Gobsmacked at the broccoli in in store today as all of them had stems that were huge and if you’re paying by weight then all that stalk you don’t use is a waste of money, So I got the trusty knife out and trimmed them babies down haha ok it’s a tiny tiny saving but it all helps.”

But rather than being impressed with his deed, hundreds of shoppers responded, with most saying the same thing – ‘you should eat the stalks too’, reports The Manchester Evening News.

“The stalks are really tasty and can be used in stocks or cooked with rest of it,” said one.

“Ridiculous! Just grate it and use in salads/soup/stir-fry,” said another.

A third added: “How embarrassing is this. I’m all for saving a bit but this is downright ridiculous.”

Others said you wouldn’t go around opening packages to chop off what you don’t want, so why should you do it with fresh produce. And some went a step further, describing the man’s actions as ‘illegal’.

“The stalks are edible! Your action is illegal,” said one, while another added: “Needs reporting I think why should he be allowed to carry a knife when other people get arrested if caught with any type of weapon.”

However, some shoppers defended the man, describing it as ‘a great idea for people who don’t like the stem’.

“I do that all the time,” said one. “I always have done. I think it’s cheeky of the supermarkets doing this.”

“Good for you,” said another. “I remember my mum when I was child breaking off the stems.”
