A secondary school in Nottinghamshire faced major disruption after a group of travellers illegally entered and pitched up on the school’s grounds. The Newark Academy, based on London Road, Balderton, had several caravans turn up at the school on Friday, June 24.

Despite their presence, the school continued to operate as normal, in efforts to minimise the impact on students. Head of the school, Chris Fisher, said: “The disruption to school was significant and I was incredibly proud of how our entire Academy community responded.

“The staff at Newark Academy responded exceptionally well, ensuring that our students were able to enter and leave site safely. We all pulled together, Trust and external agencies included, to ensure that disruption to our children’s learning was minimalised.

He added: “I am incredibly proud of how we managed the situation.” The travellers have since left the school grounds and are reportedly a separate group to those who pitched up at the former Lilley and Stone school site in Newark on Saturday, June 25.
