Lady Bay Bridge could stay closed or partially closed for weeks – if not possibly months, Highways officials have confirmed. The key route into Nottingham remains closed after a lorry crashed off the structure on Monday, July 4 morning.
The incident caused damage to the bridge which must be repaired before it can be fully reopened. A full assessment is still to be carried out.
Nottinghamshire County Council has now confirmed the bridge will remain completely closed for the rest of the week as safety assessments are made. Nottinghamshire County Councillor Neil Clarke, Transport & Environment Committee chairman and Bingham West representative for the Conservatives, said it’s hoped they can reopen it one way next week but much planning is still to be done.
He said: “I am afraid it will be affected for many weeks. It could be into a few months, possibly. Obviously, we’re still slightly in the unknown until a full assessment has been made.”
Mr Clarke added: “It was certainly a serious incident. That’s for sure. As far as we know, the main structure of the bridge has not been affected but there are some probably minor structural effects that we need to assess and check to make sure that the brick parapet can be rebuilt and reconnected to the bridge structure safely, without without any detriment.”
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident and police confirmed on Tuesday that the driver of the vehicle suffered injuries which are not believed to life altering or life threatening at this stage.
Motorists are being asked to find an alternative route for the time being.
